Have you had your thyroid tested lately? Hair loss is a symptom of low thyroid.

Also i was told by my hair dresser that women loose a lot of hair every 7 years starting from the time their period started. It’s a hormone thing I guess?

Male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness are fundamentally the same with certain distinct elements that set them apart. Male pattern baldness begins with a receding hairline above the forehead or a thinning crown. This recession continues and leaves a ring-shaped pattern of hair at the sides and back of the head.

Androgenetic Alopecia is a term that essentially means male and female pattern hair loss. It is hereditary, can come from either side of the family and depends greatly on age and hormones. According to a study done by Rogaine, over 95% of permanent hair loss can be attributed to Androgenetic Alopecia and it affects millions of men, women and children across North America. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder which causes hair to fall out in random patches around the scalp. Cells in the immune system attack the hair follicles and inhibit them from producing hair. Sometimes this occurs very unexpectedly and can cause a burning or tingling sensation. In serious cases the entire body may experience hair loss, including eyebrows and facial hair. According to Rogaine research, only about 20% of Alopecia Areata circumstances can be attributed to heredity factor in contrast to Androgenic Alopecia’s very high genetic link.

Most of the time the body naturally repairs the problem and the hair grows back and Alopecia Areata is usually temporary. Anagen Effluvium most commonly occurs due to chemotherapy drug treatments and certain other medications. Chemotherapy drugs poison not only cancer cells, but also the cells responsible for hair and nail growth. This destroys follicles and inhibits hair shafts from forming, therefore causing shedding throughout treatment. This condition is temporary; the hair usually grows back when the treatment reaches an end.

You would want to check with your doctor first to determine if there is a medical condition behind the hair loss. It can be due to vitamin deficiency, hormone imbalance, or maybe stress. Then discuss with them of any treatment options. Rogaine is a treatment and the Nioxin brand of hair products is for hair loss and is known to work very well. If your hair loss is very noticeable, you can look for plastic surgeons in your area who work with hair loss or a local Hair Center of America who can find some options for you including transplants or wigs.

I’d recommend first avoiding any spam… Herbal supplements are a hot bed for scam artists to make a website and claim to sell fad herbs at inflated prices. Buy only from websites you know and trust or from your local health food stores.

As far as finding the information, there are many good books out there that give good information about herbs and whatnot. I’d start with Prescription for Nutritional Healing… It’s by Balch and Balch and is as big as a large phone book so it’s got TONS of good info. I have that as one of my main reference books and it’s starting to get rather torn up around the edges. LOL!
There are a lot of options out there for herbs and supplements, but be aware that different people do respond differently to different things (same is true for foods and drugs as well)… Just because something doesn’t work as well for you doesn’t mean it won’t work better for someone else (and vice versa… So friend’s advice on which supplement to take isn’t always the best answer). And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality don’t apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.

Growing healthy hair doesn’t come from a bottle or pills and hair products do not speed hair growth. Any hair oil, is another form to keep hair moisturized, nothing more. If you’re in HS, your hair & nails should be growing normally, and as healthily as possible, since you’re eating healthy foods. But when hair isn’t growing as fast, it’s because they’ve been tempered with: chemicals, hair straightening, etc. . . My hair grew from bob to waist length in 3 1/2 – 4 years in HS.

I know hair. I have over 4 decades of hair know-how. I have silky, shiny, soft, smooth very healthy hair down to my knees. Previously damaged by perming & dyeing in the 80′s & 90′s. I’ve known people in their 30′s whose hair stopped growing from ironing their hair in the 70′s. I’m also a 21 year old white female going through the same exact problem ((I was diagnosed with telogen effluvium)). What I would do for the time being is keep taking the biotin, and be VERY careful with Rogaine. It has been told to work wonders for some people but has been said to cause more harm than good in others. Depending on the type of hair loss, once you start using Rogaine, that hair could all fall out when you stop using it. If it really is baldness, that could be the case.

I would start using Nioxin ((found in specialty beauty shops such as Sallys, Master Cuts, Trade Secret, etc.)). It doesn’t make your hair thicker, it doesn’t make your hair grow, but it makes you and others perceive it is thicker until the problem can be fixed. My hair loss was really noticable around the temples and after using Nioxin, it was barely noticable. It’s a bit pricey, which i understand the college student thing, but the whole system is $20 cheaper than Rogaine. I really hoped this helped and keep your chin up. You’re not the only one with this problem!

Keep eating properly with lots of protein and vegetables. Something that would help you on avoiding hair loss and making your hair grow back and stronger is using Rosemary shampoo. This is great for strengthing hair and making it grow. Once you have it, add 5 spoons of honey to the shampoo bottle and let it rest for one day before using it. You could find this shampoo online or at organic grocery stores like Whole Foods. It’s not that expensive either and after the first week of use you will notice the results.

I did treatment in ’05 and successfully cleared HCV.

My treatment was 24 weeks.

Genotypes 2 & 3 only have to endure 24 weeks of treatment. Genotype 1a, 1b go for 48 weeks.

The side effects vary..but at such a young age treatment is easier.

Color Diluted Alopecia is not indicative of any health issue, it is caused by a gene linked to the dilution gene, it is not caused by bad nutrition or other health issues. It is simply hair loss and does not require major treatment; just keep the skin clean and free of anything that may block the follicles or cause skin irratation. If the dog has any scabbing, crusting, irritation, etc., then there is likely an accompanying infection. If any infection or possible mange has been treated and the hair remains thin, then you know he has CDA. Dogs that have CDA will not regain their coat, but they can live out perfectly healthy lives otherwise. Omega 3′s and 6′s can help just by keeping the skin healthy, usually a dog that size can get about 1-2 tsp. Of good quality fish oil a day.

Just like hair loss in people, it does not mean they are unhealthy nor is there much you can do to regrow the hair other than to keep the dog in good health and keep the coat clean.

Oh, and if the coat gets really thin, be careful about sunburn. Sunscreen is a must on sunny days if the dog doesn’t have a coat to keep the sun away.

Different hair regrowth products work differently. You need to determine what kind of male-patten baldness was more common in your family (e.g. Rogaine works on certain areas of the head only). So the first step is “diagnosis”. Otherwise, there will be no benefit of spending money on these products. Also, there are no significant benefits of using hair regrowth products to prevent the hair falling out. It’s genetically determined. Such products only help when the hair cannot grow by itself. So as long as nature’s doing its thing, no need to interfere.
